Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, the anniversary of the 1970 birth of what is regarded as the modern environmental movement.

Today, Earth Day is recognized by more than a billion people every year across the world, as a day of action to change our behavior - and create meaningful policy changes.

Look, for example, at a key campaign of the Earth Day organization - the drive towards regenerative farming.

As a result of over farming, development, and the use of pesticides, American soil is being damaged to the extent that some experts predict there will be fewer than 60 good harvests remaining.

That is frightening! But our own farming practices are making serious efforts to reverse this decline.

Let’s hear again from the experts at Earth Day: “The United States is losing soil 10 times faster than it is replenished.

“Research continues to reveal the damaging effects to the soil from tillage, applications of agricultural chemicals and salt-based fertilizers, and carbon mining. Regenerative Agriculture reverses this paradigm to build for the future.”

Many spirits are traditionally distilled from corn. And there are plenty of corn-infused cocktails on the market, too. Leave them well alone.

New research from the University of Colorado Boulder (published in “Earth's Future”) found that one-third of the fertilizer used to help grow corn in the U.S. is applied merely to compensate for the inadequate quality of the soil.

Using so much fertilizer is costing U.S. farmers more than a half-billion dollars extra every year. Remember what the good folks at Earth Day said? “Sustainability is the path to prosperity.”

There is also a heavy environmental cost of using pesticides. Most recent figures showed that 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions came from fertilizer production.

While excess nitrogen and phosphorus run off fields into rivers, lakes and other waterways, creating dangerously unhealthy conditions for freshwater and marine life.
